I welcome students of any backgrounds and ability; it’s never too late to start learning as long as you have the passion. Learning piano is like mastering a foreign language; we learn how to listen, speak, read and write.
I employ a foundation-based teaching approach. In the beginning, students will learn to read music, understand different rhythms and develop techniques for tackling challenging passages, musical expression and body movement. Once they reach an appropriate level, I introduce ABRSM piano exams, which not only focus on repertoire and scales but also strengthen sight-reading and aural skills.
Mastering an instrument is no easy task; it requires long-term dedication and engagement. Learning music parallels the process of learning a foreign language: listening means paying attention to the sounds you create, speaking involves singing the notes, reading is the ability to interpret written music and writing encompasses understanding music theory.
Many of my students have achieved merits and distinctions in their ABRSM exams, won top prizes at music festivals and regularly performed at school events. I have taught students from state schools to independent schools, including Alleyn’s School, Bickley Park School, Breaside Prep, City of London School, City of London School for Girls, Dulwich College, Dulwich Prep School, Eltham College, King’s College School and St. Paul’s School.
Alongside teaching, I also offer instrumental accompaniment for grade exams. Through rehearsals, I help with pitch, rhythm and shaping musical phrases, and I can also support scale and arpeggio work as well as aural training. As an Educator
“Kai is a deeply dedicated teacher. My son has been learning piano with her for the past three years and has made tremendous progress. What sets Kai apart is her attention to detail and her ability to connect music to emotion, rather than simply focusing on playing the notes. Her lessons are truly unique and inspiring.”
“Kaishun has been teaching piano to my son for nearly 3 years, from a complete beginner level he has managed to achieve a few gold medals in various piano competitions. Kaishun is a very mindful and inspiring teacher and sets high standards by her own playing that my son admires a lot and tries to copy.”
“Kaishun has a very structured and thoughtful approach to teaching. For younger children, she encourages parents to sit in on lessons, which is especially helpful for children like my son, who might otherwise struggle to absorb everything. Each lesson is broken into small, manageable sections — working on a piece, some theory, listening and sight-reading — all revisited regularly, as repetition is key for young learners (and parents too!). She also sets clear weekly tasks and follows up on homework, which really helps keep learning on track and prevents things from getting lost between lessons.”
